The popularity of television shows like CSI and Criminal Minds has made forensics careers popular choices for students. Forensic colleges now offer online classes.

Television dramas such as the CSI series, Criminal Minds and Dexter have stimulated an interest in forensic science careers. Working professionals are not always able to give up time or relocate to take traditional college coursework. Online forensic science certifications are designed for people who may already be working in the field and need to sharpen or expand their knowledge base.

University of Florida Forensic Science Distance Education Programs

According to Forensic Magazine, the University of Florida was the first to offer an online forensic science certification in 2000. The program has grown and was awarded the 2006 Award of Excellence in Distance Education by the American Distance Education Consortium. Certificates are awarded in the areas of environmental forensics, forensic toxicology, forensic drug chemistry, forensic DNA and serology, forensic death investigation and forensic science. These programs include four to five classes each which the student can complete on their own schedule. A non-certificate program, Forensic Science for Lawyers, is also available. This course helps attorneys better understand forensic technology as it is used in the courtroom.

The University of Florida also offers online MS programs in forensic toxicology, drug chemistry, DNA and serology and forensic science.

American College of Forensic Examiners Certifications
