The Behavioral Science Unit (BSU) was established in 1972 at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. This Unit, where the term “serial killer” was coined began looking for patterns in the behavior of serial rapists and killers. At the BSU criminal investigative analysis and “profiling” were developed.

Agents, including well known names like John Douglas and Robert Ressler, conducted systematic interviews of serial killers like John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer to gain insight into their modus operandi, motivations, and backgrounds. These agents laid the foundations for the profilers of today and they set the early standards for drawing up profiles of violent offenders.

Criminal Profiling Services

Many of these programs eventually developed into stand-alone programs, units, and centers like the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) that opened in July 1984 on the campus of the FBI Academy to provide sophisticated criminal profiling services to state and local police for the first time.

According to the FBI website, “Behavioral science is all about better understanding criminals and terrorists—who they are, how they think, why they do what they do—as a means to help solve crimes and prevent attacks.”
